How does laser treatments work?

Wellfield Laser & Beauty provides IPL and Nd:Yag laser hair removal treatment which offers gentle, non-invasive and long-lasting solutions to unwanted hair anywhere on the face or body. Whether you have dark or light skin, curly or fine hair or even coarse hair that are prone to bumps and ingrown hairs, you too can get rid of unwanted hairs in problem areas.

We use two different methods of laser  using an award winning Lynton laser to ensure the most effective results for unwanted hair and other laser treatments. The process is customized for each person based on hair & skin colour as well as depth and texture of the hair follicle. Laser hair removal does not pull hair out like waxing or individually probe each hair follicle like electrolysis, making it by far, the most painless and cost-effective means of removing body hair.

How the Laser removes the hair

Lasers work by emitting a specialised pulsed light that is absorbed by the melanin, or colour, in a strand of hair. The laser heats the hair in its follicle (the sac in which the hair grows), destroying the hair at its root, without damaging any of the surrounding skin. For Intense Pulsed Light treatment a thin layer of chilled gel is applied to help guide the light, but this is not required for a laser procedure. Laser hair removal works best when the hair is 1 to 2 mm.
Lasers have been in use for years, particularly in surgical procedures. The laser operates in the infrared spectrum of light rather than the ultraviolet spectrum, as does sunlight, which can cause skin damage. Although the laser is safe for use on the surface of all body areas, as a matter of policy, Wellfield Laser & Beauty do not treat very dark skin or anyone with a suntan. Unfortunately these individuals are not ideal candidates for this laser treatment.

Is the treatment painful?

This is a common initial concern for many. Generally laser treatment is not much more painful and has been associated with resembling a flick of an elastic band against the skin for a quick second with each pulse.  Some have described the treatment to be similar to that of waxing.

Am I suitable for the treatment?

Most people are suitable for treatment. Best results are often achieved with clients who have fair skin and dark hair. Dark hair is more easily treated as it has a high concentration of melanin. Fair hair however, contains less melanin and is harder to treat. Red, light blonde and grey/white hair has minute amounts or no melanin so is not suitable for treatment If you are unsure whether you are suitable for laser treatment, please book a consultation which is absolutely  FREE.

How long will the treatment take?

Treatments can take as little as 10 minutes to an hour and a half depending on the size of the treatment area.

How many treatments will I need?

Only hair that is actively growing is affected, therefore multiple treatments are needed. Dependent upon the body area treated the colour, coarseness and density of the hair and the degree of laser energy appropriate for the client's skin type, typically 6 or more treatments are needed for optimum results. Treatments should be spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on area being treated.

What will I see after the treatment?

The hair follicles are damaged by heat but the hairs remain in the follicles. The dead hairs shed after 1 – 3 weeks as the epidermis renews. During this period the hairs will seem to ‘grow’ as they are pushed out by the new epidermis.

Are there any side effects?

The skin may be red immediately after treatment and the hair follicles may be swollen and bumpy but this is normal and usually subsides within a few hours. Adverse reactions are rare but may include a small blister or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.

How much do the treatments cost?

Prices are determined by the area to be treated, the area's size and the amount and density of the hair in the area. Approximate price ranges are available to view on our price list page, however, an exact amount can only be obtained during the course of your free private consultation once the technician has visually assessed the area to be treated. We always give a fair and competitive price.
